Volunteer Opportunities

Foster Home– Requires application and home visit (to determine which animal will best suit the family, home, lifestyle, and to discuss the foster applicant’s preferences and limitations.)  LCHS secures the annual individual Kansas foster home license.   Foster home assumes responsibility for care, training, and handling of foster pets, to include participating in adoption events.   Financial responsibility for veterinary care is determined by agreement between LCHS and each foster home.  Animals entering foster care are normally spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped at LCHS expense, with any other immediate medical needs paid.  Pets go to foster homes with parasite prevention, leash/collar/harness, bed, crate, litter box as appropriate for the pet.

Spay / Neuter Transport – LCHS sponsors monthly transports to No More Homeless Pets KC (NMHPKC) for spay /neuter / vaccinations.  Owners bring pets to a central location.  LCHS registers, collects payment and prepares animals for transport by NMHPKC to their facility.  NMHPKC returns pets the next morning for acceptance by LCHS, then pick up by owners.  Occurs Thursday & Friday mornings mid-month.  Volunteers act as Coordinator or Assistant.  Types of activities:

  1. Registration contact (email or phone calls) for scheduling, sending reminders, answering owner questions.  May require multiple calls /e-mails per owner.  May require delivery of pet carriers / kennels / traps for loan and retrieval/turn-in to LCHS.
  2. Arrange for location; set up for arrival of pets.
  3. Complete paperwork when animals arrive; collect payment;  assure pets are properly crated and tagged.
  4. Prepare “goody bags” with treats, promotional items and pet info.
  5. Receive animals; provide paperwork, meds, “goody bags” and pets to owners.

(Volunteers may assist owners with transport of pets to or from the central location.)
