LCHS is working to improve the quality of life for people and pets in Leavenworth County now and in the future.
LCHS is working with Leavenworth County elected and law enforcement officials to help establish enhanced standards for animal care and control in Leavenworth County. LCHS provided a draft proposed resolution to the Board of County Commissioners which would bring Leavenworth County up to a level of service and care comparable to that in surrounding counties. Each of the Commissioners has expressed support for improving animal care and control in the county, but many of the measures proposed are not immediately attainable due to current budget constraints. LCHS will continue to work with concerned citizens, County government and law enforcement for as long as it takes to reach our goals of holding owners responsible for the care of their pets and providing basic services for public health and safety.
Basehor’s Mayor Terry Hill has stated in the media and in his State of the City address that he intends to make Basehor this county’s first no-kill city for dogs and cats. Basehor Councilman Bill Moyer, also a LCHS Board Member, will chair the Basehor Companion Animal Committee. The initial effort will be to define what “No-Kill” means to Basehor, assess existing policies, programs and ordinances, and then to recommend to the Mayor and City Council how to go forward to achieve this incredible goal.
