We are heartbroken to share that we had to say goodbye to our sweet girl Prue yesterday.

Prue came to us around this time last year (June of 2024), with barely any hair and very little meat on her bones. She was found taking up residence and hiding away in someone's shed off of Evans Road in Basehor. Since then, Prue has become known around here for her misleading barks and her goofy but loving attitude. She loved playing in the pools, making male doggy friends, and she would never turn away a snack of any kind.

Prue had been having some tummy issues that lead to what we believed to have been a mild rectal prolapse. It was when she went under for the procedure to correct it, that we discovered she did not have any kind of prolapse but instead was a cancerous growth making itself known. Prue was diagnosed with late stage colorectal cancer, and at that point in time there was very little we could do beyond giving her all the love, care, and cheeseburgers as possible.

A big thank you to the amazing humans over at Pleasant Valley Veterinary Clinic who treated Prue with so much care, compassion, and most of all patience. We appreciate you a lot.

We never want the shelter to be a pet's last place of residence, but we will always do our greatest to make sure that they know love and know comfort during the entirety of their stay with us. Cancer sucks and these kinds of goodbyes are never easy for anyone. Prue may not have gotten to experience what life was like in a house with a family of her own, but we hope she knew she had a home with us and a family of volunteers and staff who loved her dearly. Rest easy sweet girl.
