From Near Death to New Beginnings: Zelda’s Story

When Zelda escaped from a home overrun with neglected animals, she couldn't have known it would save her life—and the lives of dozens of other frightened dogs living in squalor.

The 2-year-old poodle was near death when a passerby found her wandering down a rural road in 2024. She was brought to Leavenworth County Humane Society where our team quickly realized she needed emergency care. Severely anemic, matted and emaciated, Zelda was rushed to BluePearl Pet Hospital.

"She was in such bad shape we weren't sure she would even make the trip to the vet," recalls our executive director, Crystal Swann Blackdeer.

Zelda had escaped from a property where dozens of neglected animals were struggling to survive in heartbreaking conditions. Her case, and the successful prosecution of the owners, ultimately helped dozens of other dogs find the safety, healing and loving homes they deserved.

Zelda was first.

Sally, an LCHS, Inc. volunteer, first met Zelda just after she was rescued.

"She didn't even look like a poodle" Sally says. "She was starving to death."

Their connection was immediate.

A longtime dog mom who has rescued and loved more than 10 dogs over the years, Sally welcomed Zelda into her home, where she now lives peacefully with her four rescued siblings.

Zelda's transformation was like a miracle in the making.

With proper nutrition, medical care, patience and love, she slowly began to heal. As she grew stronger, daily walks helped rebuild her physical strength.

Day by day, her personality emerged.

"That saying of 'Who rescued who?' is so true," Sally says. "All of my dogs have taught me a lot."

Zelda's story of recovery touched hearts across our community, and together you helped make her recovery possible. With your support, we'll be ready for the next animal who needs us.
